JENNIFER ABBOTT ON THE CORPORATION, THE DOCUMENTARY ON HOW PSYCHOPATHS HAVE TAKEN OVER THE WORLD, AND HOW TO STOP THEM (MF GALAXY 040)

Image
Corporate crime wave on a global scale that corporate media doesn’t want you to know about The Canadian feature The Corporation is one of the most acclaimed and electrifying documentaries in recent memory, which examines corporations as one of the most dangerous institutions on the planet. Beginning with the legal principle in the United States and Canada that corporations are “persons,” the documentary then asks the question, “If they are persons, what kind of persons are they?” According to the fourth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association, corporations as persons meet the definition of psychopaths, that is, people unable to experience remorse. Such a psychological defect turns such individuals into parasites and predators. A smaller number of them become killers. While the word psychopath and its one-time synonym sociopath have been replaced by the wordy phrase “Anti-Social Personality Disord...

IZZELDIN ABUELAISH - Fighting hate and occupation with peace and education (MF GALAXY 014)

Image
In January 2009, then-53-year-old Palestinian infertility specialist and peace activist Izzeldin Abuelaish was employed at an Israeli hospital. He took pride in building the personal basis for trust and peace between Israelis and Palestinians. As he told the New York Times in 2009, “I wanted every Palestinian treated in [our hospital] to go back and say how well the Israelis treated them.” But on January 16, the day after Martin Luther King’s birthday, and 22 days into the 2008 – 2009 Israel-Gaza war that killed 13 Israelis and 1400 Palestinians (during which time newly-elected US president Barack Obama was almost whisper-silent on Palestinian deaths), Israeli tanks twice shelled the house of Abuelaish. After having recently lost his wife to leukemia, in one moment he lost his niece and three of his daughters. Ilan Pappé and Noam Chomsky on Israeli occupation, "apartheid," discrimination and ethnic cleansing

Image
"Counterpunch: The word apartheid is more and more often used by NGOs and charities to describe Israel's actions towards the Palestinians (in Gaza, the OPT but also in Israel itself). Is the situation in Palestine and Israel comparable to Apartheid South Africa? "Ilan Pappé: There are similarities and dissimilarities. The colonialist history has many chapters in common and some of the features of the Apartheid system can be found in the Israeli policies towards its own Palestinian minority and towards those in the occupied territories. "Some aspects of the occupation, however, are worse than the apartheid reality of South Africa and some aspects in the lives of Palestinian citizens in Israel, are not as bad as they were in the hey days of Apartheid. The main point of comparison to my mind is political inspiration. "The anti-Apartheid movement, the ANC, the solidarity networks developed throughout the years in the West, should inspire a more focused a...

We must all fight anti-Semitism

Image
I was having a conversation today with a friend and the topic of anti-Semitism came up. The prevalence of this hatred, a European White-on-White violence that devolved over history into genocide, continues in some quarters to this day. Those of us who are progressives and who maintain a strong critique of Israel must resolutely oppose anti-Semites at every turn , just as, while defending our Muslim brothers and sisters, we must unceasingly oppose the tyrannical governments of and reactionary movements inside any of the predominantly Muslim countries. Our Jewish brothers and sisters, like our Muslim brothers and sisters, are often excellent allies in the struggle for a better world, and I’m proud to call journalists such as Amy Goodman, Jeff Cohen and Greg Palast, writers such as David Simon, and analysts such as Noam Chomsky, among my heroes. In the spirit of that conversation, below is a list of what I hope are some helpful resources. Fighting anti-Semitism Cana...
