In January 2009, then-53-year-old Palestinian infertility specialist and peace activist Izzeldin Abuelaish was employed at an Israeli hospital. He took pride in building the personal basis for trust and peace between Israelis and Palestinians. As he told the New York Times in 2009, “I wanted every Palestinian treated in [our hospital] to go back and say how well the Israelis treated them.” But on January 16, the day after Martin Luther King’s birthday, and 22 days into the 2008 – 2009 Israel-Gaza war that killed 13 Israelis and 1400 Palestinians (during which time newly-elected US president Barack Obama was almost whisper-silent on Palestinian deaths), Israeli tanks twice shelled the house of Abuelaish. While Democratic contender Obama is held up to scrutiny and shaming for his Reverend’s comments—which when taken in context sound entirely logical— the comments of some supporters of Republican nominee John McCain are outrageous. Born in 1925 in Omaha to parents active in Marcus Garvey’s 2-million member United Negro Improvement Association , Malcolm learned by age six the danger of living while Black in the United States. His father was murdered, apparently by Klansmen. Despite this trauma, in school he wa s a top student, even becoming class president. But his teacher di smissed his desire to be lawyer, saying that being a carpenter was more realistic for “a nigger.” Following the father’s death, the family disintegrated. Teenaged Malcolm drifted away to New York and Detroit , and into a life of c rime. Finally arrested and convicted in 19 46, he was sentenced at age 21 to eight to ten years in prison where, ironically, he found new life.
