Scope of Hurricane Destruction Much Worse Than 9/11

The New York Times writes: "[F]or many African-American leaders, there is a growing outrage that many of those still stuck at the center of this tragedy were people who for generations had been pushed to the margins of society.

"The victims, they note, were largely black and poor, those who toiled in the background of the tourist havens, living in tumbledown neighborhoods that were long known to be vulnerable to disaster if the levees failed. Without so much as a car or bus fare to escape ahead of time, they found themselves left behind by a failure to plan for their rescue should the dreaded day ever arrive."

"The state of Mississippi is reporting that there is a 50 mile stretch of coastline where 90 percent of the structures are destroyed."

"The Wall Street Journal reports that the Department of Health of Human Services has promised to set up 40 emergency aid stations. As of yesterday only one was open and it was located 80 miles away from New Orleans."

"The White House announced it would have zero tolerance for looters - even for those taking essential items needed to stay alive. Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco warned that troops had orders to shoot to kill. She said, "These troops are fresh back from Iraq, well trained, experienced, battle tested and under my orders to restore order in the streets.... These troops know how to shoot and kill and they are more than willing to do so...."

Michael Moore writes: "No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing-- NOTHING--to do with this!"

Plus, when it comes to disasters such as this hurricane, some in the corporate media are helping demonstrate that Black people "loot" whereas White people "find food."
